Larry Pratt practices in the areas of commercial litigation including construction, trucking liability defense, premises liability, auto liability, errors and omissions, municipality defense, employment defense, appellate work, civil rights and governmental tort liability defense in the state and federal courts of Missouri and Illinois.

Before joining Fox Smith, LLC, Larry practiced at mid-sized regional defense firms in their St. Louis offices heading their litigation sections and opening new offices. Prior to private practice, Larry was an Assistant Circuit Attorney for the City of St. Louis investigating and prosecuting fraud and white-collar crime and defending the St. Louis Sheriff's Department in Section 1983 civil rights claims.

Larry has published articles in the Missouri Lawyers Weekly and Midwest In-House on topics ranging from risk management to statutory construction.  Larry also presents at seminars throughout the region on topics ranging from Freedom of Information Act and Missouri Sunshine Law to municipal contracting. His clients include municipalities, construction companies, entertainment venues, non-profit organizations and national corporations.

As a trial attorney, Larry has obtained favorable verdicts on behalf of clients in 40+ jury-tried cases.  Some of his most recent examples are:

  • Wilson v. City of St. Charles - a unanimous defendant's verdict for the municipality on a claim of personal injury and inverse condemnation.
  • Ogle et al v. Ameren et al, - a unanimous defendants' verdict for the defendant electric utility and subcontractor involving alleged destruction of a historic cemetery.

Additionally, Larry regularly obtains favorable summary judgment rulings in federal district court regarding § 1983, ADA, 1st, 4th and 14th Amendment claims. Some examples are:

 Clark v. Deputy Clark- US Dist. Ct., Eastern Dist. of Missouri, involved claims of 1st Amendment freedom of speech violations; 4th Amendment violations involving search and seizure and excessive force; and 14th Amendment due process violations. The court’s favorable ruling was upheld on appeal by the US Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

Wallace v. Ste. Genevieve Co. et al.-US Dist. Ct., Eastern Dist. of Missouri, involving claims of 1st Amendment violations of freedom of religion.

Tucker v. Karol-US Dist. Ct., Eastern Dist. of Missouri, involving 14th Amendment failure to protect claim.
